Hallingskeid is a train station at the Bergen Railway in the Hardangervidda.

background

Hallingskeid is a train station in the middle of northern Hardangervidda am Rallarvegen. The station is important as one of the few direct accesses to the high plateau for hikers and skiers. Some regional and local trains stop for them every day in the otherwise almost uninhabited region.

The Hallingskeid station was built in 1908 along with the main route of the Bergen Railway opened and was occupied until 1982. Soon after opening, the original uncovered platforms were surrounded by snow tunnels. Today the entire station system is protected by a snow tunnel, so that a complete train stops inside the tunnel.

The original station buildings, which also included a hotel, burned down in 1960 when the snow tunnel caught fire again. The tunnel burned a total of five times, the last time in 2011 when a double train fell victim to the flames, but nobody was harmed.

Two of the buildings from the time when Hallingskeid was still inhabited all year round have been preserved and are now used by the Norwegian hiking club DNT.
