For low cost airlines airlines that have pruned the extra service out of their products to allow for a low price are usually appointed. The most well-known low-cost airline in Europe and Finland is the Irish Ryanair [1]. Maintenance costs are saved by operating only one type of aircraft and there is only one class of travel. Nowadays, even when traditional airlines cut back on their services, it can sometimes be difficult to say which company is the so-called low cost airline and what not.

Practical things

The cheap price of a cheap flight does not arise from scratch. Here’s a list of a few practical things that affect an air passenger’s life when flying on low-cost airlines. Of course, not all companies work the same way, so the list below is mainly worth keeping in mind when comparing ticket terms and prices from different companies.

Side fields

Low-cost airlines often use slightly more remote airports because they do not charge airlines such high prices for their services. For example In London often flown to Stansted or Gatwick airports instead of the more expensive and larger Heathrow.

Serving

If hunger surprises or you would like a glass of champagne to start that holiday, you will have to dig your picture. Serving is almost invariably chargeable, and some few airlines even prohibit bringing their own drinks and food on board. During the current security checks, you may have to buy your lunch at an expensive airport anyway after the security check.

Pricing

Tickets are usually cheaper the earlier you book. There is more to the rule in low-cost airline advertising than the exception is that airport taxes are not included in the reported flight prices.

Self-service for the surfer

Low cost airlines usually only sell electronic tickets and probably only online. Travel agents can handle the booking for you, but will charge their own brokerage fee for this. As a specialty, some airlines allow you to make changes to your bookings online - though sometimes the price of the changes is tougher than a new ticket!

Baggage

Suitcases usually cost extra. Hand luggage can be taken on board free of charge, but hold bags typically cost a few euros per piece. If your flight includes several flights, the luggage cannot be cleared up to the destination, but the bags must be cleared for each flight separately at intermediate airports.
