Chania - Hania

Chania is Crete the second largest city and the capital of western Crete.

By road

Traffic in Chania is confusing and there is little concern about speed limits or guardrails. Renting a car is easy, but especially for the faint of heart, you should avoid driving in the city center.

By bus

From Chania and Chania can be reached by bus from many holiday villages cheaply. Buses run every half hour on weekdays and take you to Chania Bus Station in the city center.

Walking

Chania is a fairly small town that can be easily explored on foot. However, if you are interested in more remote areas, you may want to rent a car or hop on a bus.

See

There is a lot to see in Chania. In the old town, you can explore the area’s Venetian past by visiting the lighthouse or sitting in the harbor’s restaurants. The Chania Archaeological Museum can be visited for a small entrance fee in the old town.

There are lots of small boutiques in the old town with traditional handicrafts and souvenirs ranging from olive oils to soaps. In the city center, the shopping street has several larger clothing stores such as Bershka, Stratovarius and Pull and Bear. In clothing stores, prices are slightly lower than in Finland.

Eat

In Chania, the price level of restaurants is significantly lower than in Finland. Before the meal, bread is often served as an appetizer, unless other appetizers have been ordered separately. Food portions in several places are large, and it is common to order a few foods for the party first, and more if necessary. Free dessert is often served after the meal. Please note that in Greece, an additional charge of EUR 2 for bread and water will be added to the bill. However, you can consult with the waiter if the bread or water has not been touched. It is a good idea to remember at the tip that copper-colored coins are not left. The money is left at the table after the waitress has brought the invoice.

In Chania, drinking water from the tap is safe until mid-summer, but the most sensitive stomachs should drink bottled water. Beers and wines are also cheap in restaurants.
