Harderwijk is a former Hanseatic city in the province Gelderland at the edge of Veluwe and the Wolderwijd, roughly halfway between Zwolle and Amersfoort. Harderwijk is the center of the North West Veluwe region. The city of Harderwijk itself has around 37,500 inhabitants.

background

In 1231 Harderwijk received city rights from Count Otto II von Gelre and Zutphen. It played an important role in the Hanseatic League between 1285 and 1628. The Geldrische Münze was based here at that time, and there was also a university from 1648 to 1811. From 1844 onwards, the colonial model authority of the East Indian Army was located in Harderwijk (later Koninklijk Nederlandsch-Indian Leger). This colonial army did not have the very best reputation, it was also disparagingly referred to as the "Gutter of Europe".

The city lies directly on the Veluwemeer and the Wolderwijd, which were created in 1932 after the polders of the Zuiderzee. Where the boulevard today Aan de Meren lies, the botter used to lay at the Vischpoort to get their fish on the Vischmarkt to negotiate. It is still possible to make trips with a botter over one of the marginal lakes. After 1932, fishing as a source of income declined sharply. Trade, industry and tourism increased steadily.
