background

In Hawāra left Amenemhet III., 12th Dynasty (Middle Kingdom), build his second pyramid. His first, the Black Pyramid of Amenemhet III, was in the southeast of the area of Dahshūr built. The burial took place safely in Hawāra.

This system became famous for the labyrinth in the south of the pyramid, which served as a mortuary temple and of which several ancient authors such as Herodotus, Strabo and Pliny report: The 400 m long temple complex extended over two floors and is said to have 3000 rooms and 8000 columns, of which today de facto nothing can be seen anymore as it has been canceled since Roman times. Today's reconstructions are based on Petrie's excavations around 1890.

Another special feature is that the pyramid has two sarcophagi and double burial equipment.

The graves of his officials were laid in the north of the pyramid. The necropolis continued to be used in the New Kingdom, in the late period and especially in Greco-Roman times; Numerous mummy portraits testify to its use in Greco-Roman times. In the late period, numerous crocodile mummies were buried here.
