Heusden is a city in the Dutch province North Brabant. In addition to Heusden itself, the towns of Drunen, Nieuwkuijk, Vlijmen, Haarsteeg and Elshout also belong to the municipality of Heusden.

The fortress town, restored on the basis of a fortress from the Eighty Years War, looks like an open-air museum with its bastions, the city center with old houses and windmills.

The nearest train station is that 1 S’Hertogenbosch train station. A number of Intercitys and Sprinters stop there, for example after Amsterdam, The hague, Nijmegen and Venlo. There are also continuous buses from here to Vlijmden, Haarsteeg and Heusden (line 135) and to Nieuwkuijk and Drunen (line 136).

In Heusden there is a bridge over the Maas instead of a ferry line, but there are also ferries at other places upstream and downstream.

  • The old town center of Heusden is with one star-shaped bulwark including the moat secured against intruders. This bulwark can be admired in different places where streets cross it.
  • 1 Old Port There are many historic brick houses, an old lifting bridge and a windmill.
  • Another Windmill, the 2 Moles 2 stands at the marina.
  • Everywhere inside the bulwark are old brick houses, for example am 3 Vismarkt.
  • Grote of Sint-Catharinakerk. Not fully restored after the medieval tower was blown up by German troops in late 1944.

Down

  • The 4 Loonse en Drunese Duinen National Park lies south of Drunen. It consists of a sandy landscape that is partly overgrown by bushes and partly occupied by sand fields and dunes. The area has been a national park since 2002.

Nieuwkuijk

  • The windmill 5 Emmamoles in Nieuwkuijk is still in operation. Manufactured products are sold on site and there is a café on the ground floor.

Like the rest of the Netherlands, the municipality of Heusden is criss-crossed by a system of cycle paths. You can go on nice bike tours, for example on dikes along the Meuse.

The two long-distance cycle routes LF7 and LF12 cross the Meuse east of Heusden.

Especially in the Loose en Drunese Duinen National Park, but also along the Maas, for example, you can go for walks and hikes.
