Highland is a city in Greater Los Angeles in California. It lies at the foot of the San Bernardino Mountains above the city San Bernardino.

The most important - and basically the only - tourist attraction is the casino, the Native Americans opened here in 1986. A stop in Highland is also worth considering for travelers coming from the north (Barstow) come and look for a night's lodging on the very edge of the Greater Los Angeles Area.

background

history

The white settlement of today's urban area began in 1856. The springs and thermal springs located here soon attracted visitors, for whom hotels, bathing facilities and entertainment programs were created. In 1873 - where Base Line and Palm Avenue intersect today - a settlement called Messina was built, the primal cell of today's city of Highland. In the 1880s it received the water supply; Since then, large areas have been used for growing oranges. The connection to the railway network followed in 1892.

At the turn of the century, the place was also an important location for the wood industry. 1906 took the newly established Highland Chamber of Commerce the further development of the still unincorporated town in hand. The city was not officially founded until 1987.

The last Serrano Indians living in the region were born in the late 19th century San Manuel reservation summarized, which lies north of today's urban area. The Native operate here today, among other things Gambling casino, which is also one of the largest employers in town.

Districts

Highland grew from about the corner of Base Line St and Palm Ave, a few blocks west of the U.S. expressway. Route 210. The area is now called Highland Town Center. But there is no inner city feeling here (or at any other point in the city). Retail and hospitality are widely scattered; the best way to get an impression of it is to drive off Highland Ave and Baseline St.

The neighborhoods of Highland are (from west to east): North Norton, Warm Springs, Lankershim, Harlem Springs, San Andreas, Cypress, Highland Town Center, Crossroads, Molino, and East Highlands.

Tourist Attractions

Highland has very little sightseeing in the traditional sense. The area around Main Street (Highland Historic District) is relatively old; However, too little of the original buildings from the boom in orange cultivation has been preserved to make a visit worthwhile. The adobe-style Catholic church is definitely an eye-catcher St. Adelaide (27457 Baseline St).
