The region lies on the meanders of the Elands Riverwhich flows from the Highveld down to Mbombela. The railway from Komatipoort to Pretoria once struggled along this river Elands Pass. At Waterval Boven, the railway had to cope with a height difference of more than 200 m over a distance of 7.5 km, which in 1900 was only possible with a rack railway.
