Holzmaden is a small community at the foot of the Swabian Alb.

In the 12th century the place belonged to the Zähringer sphere of influence, since 1334 it is part of Württemberg. Holzmaden was almost completely destroyed in the Thirty Years War. After this war the old Stephanuskirche, the rectory and the town hall were built. The place is known primarily for the numerous fossil finds from the Jura period.
