background

Kalakana Avenue in Waikiki

Honolulu is by far the largest city on it Hawaii with around 337,000 inhabitants, mostly of Asian origin. At the same time, Honolulu also means a county, which is home to around three-quarters of the population of Hawaii with a population of 910,000, and all of this in the southeastern tip of the island Oahu.

When the first King Kamehameha I defeated his opponents from Oahu in the Battle of Nuuanu and united Hawaii, the capital was still Lahaina on the island Maui. He himself moved his residence from Big Island to Waikiki. Under Kamehameha III, the capital was relocated to Honolulu, and a new residence with the buildings of the Iolani Palace and the Aliiolani Hale was also built.

But Honolulu soon grew thanks to the Asian immigrants who were recruited as cheap workers: they lived in China-Town in the immediate vicinity of downtown Honolulu, and soon the Hawaiians were only a minority in their own country.

The last ruler of Hawaii, Queen Liliuokalani, was arrested at Iolani Palace in 1893, and a few years later the former Kingdom of Hawaii was annexed by the United States. By the way, the queen was very musical, the song "Aloha Oe" was set to music by her.

Honolulu gained notoriety in World War II after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, even if the port is outside the urban area, but in the County Honolulu lies.
