The one in the southeast of the island Faial located city Horta is the largest settlement on the island. The local marina, which is a convenient stopover for sailors on the way from America to Europe, is significant.

The once uninhabited island of Faial was settled by the Portuguese from 1439 after it was rediscovered in 1429. Horta was laid out from 1466 and received its town charter in 1498. The city's boom came with the American trade that began in the 17th century.
