Huế - Huế

Huế is a city in the northern coastal region of Vietnam. As the former imperial city of the Nguyen dynasty (1802-1945), it is well worth seeing.

The old, "forbidden" imperial city during the fighting in the 20th century. several times damaged, with most of the sights located on the north bank of the river, which has a beautifully designed promenade in the downtown area. Accommodation and the modern business district are on the south bank of the Sông Hương (香江) known as “Perfume River” in English. The place was the longest liberated city during the Tet offensive in 1968, the recapture by US troops led to massive damage to the cityscape.

Hue is known in Vietnam for its often rainy, sticky climate - the nearby mountains shield the wind. Rainfalls are particularly pronounced from February to the end of March.

getting there

By plane

1  Phu Bai Airport (Sân bay quốc tế Phu Bài, IATA: HUI) (about 15 km south of the city.). Phu Bai Airport in the Wikipedia encyclopediaPhu Bai Airport in the Wikimedia Commons media directoryPhu Bai Airport (Q160094) in the Wikidata database.Apart from a few foreign charter flights, only domestic flights land here. A bus, tickets are available from baggage claim, costs 50,000 dong into town, regular taxis 3-4 times that.

The closest international airport is in Da Nang, about a two-hour drive away. Taxis cost US $ 40-60 per vehicle. The Company Hanoi Transfer Service offers direct transfers, which are particularly interesting for groups, as the prices are calculated per vehicle (e.g. 4-seater US $ 65, 7-seater US $ 70).

Located on the north-south railway line that crosses all of Vietnam. All four trains that serve the route every day stop here. The travel time from Hanoi (688 km) is a scheduled 11-13 hours, from Saigon (1038 km) it takes 16-18 hours. It makes sense to only buy the tickets yourself at the train station, agents are happy to add up to 100%.
The ones attached to trains SP 1 and 2 in Hanoi to Da Nang Fansipan Express-Wagons have special tourist compartments for US $ 42 in a 4-bed, 86 in a double compartment.

The route from / to the south should be driven during the day because of the magnificent landscape.

From Laos

Direct buses out Laos drive from Vientiane (sdl. bus station; from 7 p.m., further to Da Nang) in a good 15 hours. Of Pakse (Departure 8.00 a.m.) or Savannakhet The journey takes 12-13 hours. In both places, it should be noted that agencies like to advertise with heavily embellished photos and collect hefty commissions, so you should buy the tickets directly at the bus stations. Note that dollar change is required to cross the border.

mobility

At least in the old town it is easy to get around on foot.

Unfortunately, due to the large number of visitors, scams by taxi drivers and dragon boaters are very widespread. In a taxi you should always only pay by the taximeter, even "negotiated" fixed prices are at least twice as expensive! It helps up the stretches Google Maps to be viewed beforehand so as not to be driven around the block three times.
When booking the dragon boats by the hour, people tend to drive particularly slowly, and if the trip has been booked through an agent, Westerners can assume that the tariff is several times inflated.

With Cyclo- Drivers who are even more intrusive than usual in the country, the price must be negotiated in advance. It must be ensured that the required "100" refer to dong and not to US $!

Given the traffic, you should think twice about renting one of the many scooters on offer. Helmets are now compulsory in Vietnam and should be included in the price. A detailed technical examination of the vehicles is necessary. If you are not familiar with motorcycles, let it be better. Prices are a matter of negotiation, you should ask at several booths - US $ 5 per day is reasonable. Not having an international driver's license, which is mandatory, gives police officers the opportunity to extort bribes.

Tourist Attractions

Opening times are usually extended by half an hour or a full hour in summer.

Citadel and imperial city, north of the river

The first emperor of the newly established Nguyen dynasty began building the canal-protected citadel and the forbidden city in 1804. The 1  inner imperial area (Kinh thành Huế) is enclosed by a 2½ km long, six meter high wall and forms the core of the facility. After the French had finally secured their claim to rule over Indochina in 1886, the emperors were allowed to continue to “play rulers” for the Annam protectorate.

“Forbidden City”: With your back to the gate you can see three gate buildings Hiển Lâm Các, Cửu Đỉnh and Hưng Miếu on the left, before you reach the palace called Cung Diên Thọ.
To the right is the Thái Miếu, dedicated to the memory of the souls of the nine Nguyen rulers, followed by the artificial lake Vườn Thiệu Phương, in front of which the building called Thái Bình Lâu stands.
Directly on the main axis you get from the gate to the renovated i N .i building. Behind it then on the left the magnificent throne room Hữu vu. Half right behind it, with a three-legged incense burner in front of it, the equally magnificent hall Nhà has Duyệt Thị Đường inside. Free-standing in the middle is the imperial library, Điện Khôn Thái, with an interesting ceiling.

In front of the palace area, towards the river, the fortified Kỳ Đài complex, its structure the influences Vauban's fortress construction technology cannot deny. The ship, which has been converted into an upscale restaurant, lies on the extension of the axis on a jetty

Imperial tombs

You should plan a whole day for the scattered imperial tombs. Taxis from the city cost 80,000 dong. Tour groups are mostly out and about between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Boat group tours out of the city can be useful (from 25,000; admissions extra, a day costs around US $ 20); Tours with many stops in particular can have the character of a coffee trip, as there are a number of stops at shops.
The three major complexes cost (from April 1, 2015) 100,000 dong each, the less important graves of Gia Long (20 km), Thieu Tri (8 km), and Dong Khanh (inherited in 1917. from March 2014 due to renovation) closed) and the Hué Nam Shrine 40,000 each. Combined tickets (imperial city 2 or 3 grave complexes) bring small savings.

  • Tomb of Minh Mang (12 km outside), who reigned 1820-40 is an example of the classic Vietnamese style. The Sung An Temple is part of the complex.
  • 12  Tomb of Tu Duc (Lăng Tự Đức Khiêm Lăng), Thủy Xuân. 7 km. Is the most magnificent of the plants. If you only have little time in Hué, you should concentrate on this.Open: daily 8.00 a.m.-5.00 p.m.
