Ibiza (Eivissa in Catalan, Ivissa in Italian) is the capital of Ibiza.
To know
Ibiza (called simply "Vila" in Catalan) is the capital of Ibiza and also its major tourist center.
It was originally a Phoenician commercial port and then passed under the dominion of Carthage. The archaeological museum exhibits finds from the Punic era. Many come from excavations carried out in the nearby "Necròpolis del Puig des Molins", a site that in 1999 was included in the list of World Heritage Sites together with the upper town (Dalt Vila).
Ibiza owes much of its tourist success to the Flower Children who discovered it in the 60s of the twentieth century and remained enchanted by its placid rhythms of life.
Today Ibiza has changed its face and is a town with a very lively atmosphere at all hours of the day and night. Its famous night clubs act as a magnet for young people from all over Europe in search of sparkling holidays. Ibiza was also the cradle of the rave parties. Unfortunately, living expenses are not affordable for all budgets and the economic crisis of 2008 affected its tourism development by amusing young tourists for cheaper, even if much less interesting, destinations such as Lloret do Mar in Catalonia is Malia in the island Greek of Crete.
The competent authorities are trying to make Ibiza an exclusive destination for international tourism and have banned the construction of new hotel units that are not 5-star. They also limited the opening and closing times of night clubs.
How to orient yourself
Ibiza is made up of four distinct areas:
- Dalt Vila (High City) - Surrounded by walls, the upper city is grouped around the cathedral, in a panoramic position overlooking the port.
- You know Marina - The port area
- Sa Peña - Very picturesque area, Sa Peña extends between the port and the upper town. It was once a fishermen's quarter but today it is full of tourist shops.
- Eixample - West of the center, Eixample is the modern area of Ibiza crossed by theAvinguda d’Espanya, extension of Passeig de Vara de Rey, traditional place of the evening walk.
The closest beaches to Ciudad de Ibiza are "Playa Talamanca" on the north side of the dock and "Las Salinas" at the far south of Ibiza near the airport runway.
