At Cook Islands[1] are an autonomous democracy in free association with the New Zealand, located in Polynesia, in the middle of the South Pacific, with the Society Islands to the east and tonga to the west. It is an archipelago with 15 islands spread over 2.2 million km2 of ocean. Although distant, there is nothing between the islands and the Antarctica.

In the same time zone and distance from Ecuador as the Hawaii, the islands are sometimes referred to as the "Southern Hawaii". Although smaller, they are very reminiscent of this archipelago, before it was transformed into a large tourist center full of hotels.

Understand

Named after Captain Cook, who sighted them in 1770, the islands became a British protectorate in 1888. Around 1900 administrative control was transferred to New Zealand; in 1965, residents voted for a local government in free association with that country. In fact, New Zealand takes care of defence, foreign relations (including passport issuance) and currency. Other than that, the island manages itself, rigorously controlling immigration, including for New Zealanders. The biggest problems are emigration to New Zealand and government deficits.
