Rarotonga is one of the Cook Islands.
To know
Rarotonga is described in the brochures of the tourist board as the last paradise on earth. In fact, the island has experienced a significant increase in tourism in recent years, especially of matrix new Zealander which led in a relatively short time to the construction of myriads of lodgings along the entire arc of its coasts. So, if your purpose is truly the search for lost paradise, you had better migrate elsewhere.
Rarotonga is a mountainous island whose coasts are entirely surrounded by coral reefs that form a lagoon all around. The southern coast is low and sandy while the northern one is high and rocky. Access to the beaches of Rarotonga is completely free but generally the seabed is too shallow for bathing except for the south-eastern stretch of coast corresponding Muri Lagoon (pictured in the photo above on the right) and the beach of Titikaveka considered the most suitable for exploring the seabed in a mask or diving suit.

How to get
By plane
The international airport is located in the north of the island, 3 km from Avarua, the capital of Cook Islands. As of 2009, scheduled flights were operated by the following airlines:
- Air New Zealand - From / to Auckland, Christchurch, Los Angeles
- Air Rarotonga - From / to Aitutaki, Atiu, Manihiki, Mauke, Mangaia, Mitiaro
- Air Tahiti - From / to Papeete
- Virgin Australia - From / to Auckland
How to move
By public transport
An alternative to the car is the bus service that leaves from the center of Avarua and go around the island taking you back to the base.
By car
Getting around Rarotonga is simple, the only road functions as a "ring road" that connects every point of the island. Don't expect a four-lane road, it's like our suburban, two-way asphalted road. If you decide to rent a car or motorbike you must first obtain the driving license Cook Islands at the local police station in the center of Avarua. It won't take long to find it, remember you are on a Pacific island! Estimate that you will lose your license one morning, even if it all boils down to a check of the one you already have, a new photo and delivery of the local license to keep as a souvenir. If you want a motorcycle license, they will also make you do a small practical test exam. all motorists; in these situations it is better to plan to travel on foot.
