The Inari Lake is the third largest lake in Finland and is located in the north, near the border with Russia.

background

The lake is 40 x 80 km in size, up to 92 m deep and has around 3,300 islands. It used to be connected to the Barents Sea, but is now separated from it and filled with fresh water.

getting there

You can get to Lake Inari by train to Rovaniemi, and then by bus (Linja auto) to Inari.

By plane to Ivalo and then by Linja car to Inari.

By car from the ferry port Helsinki Turku or through Sweden via Haaparanta / Tornio.

There are various ways to get north by car. There is the beautiful but longer coastal stretch to Oulu, then on to Rovaniemi at the Arctic Circle; one in the east along the Finnish-Russian border to the north via Kuusamo to Kemijärvi or through central Finland (shortest route), via Jyväskylä (E75) to Oulu and on to Rovaniemi. In Sodankylä the three routes meet and it goes north through Ivalo to Inari (Ivalo to Inari are 36 km).

Of course, you can also take the bus from Helsinki to Inari (the bus then continues to the North Cape!).

The E75 / Landstrasse 4 connects on the south bank of the lake Inari With Ivalo.

Tourist Attractions

About in the middle is a mountain with a restaurant and viewing platform, from which you can look very far into the country. In the northeast you can see a large plain, while otherwise smaller mountains and lakes dominate.

activities

The lake is ideal for fishing and boat drive. Here you are completely alone and you may not see anyone else for weeks. In the winter sports area Saariselkä there are two shops that rent boats. The landlords can bring you to the lake and pick you up again later.

to buy

In Inari itself, the shopping offer is quite limited, so it is best to drive the 36 km to Ivalo.

The best place to shop is in Ivalo, 36 km away, where there are several grocery stores and a fairly large shopping center where you can get (almost) everything. There is also a small kiosk where you can get German newspapers and magazines, at least in summer. However, you have to consider that the newspapers are a day older. Lapland is just not Mallorca, where "German cultural assets" are urgently required (German beer, BILD, ...). In Ivalo you will also find the post office (in the middle of the town center) as well as 5 petrol stations, which also offer motorhome enthusiasts the opportunity to refill water and supplies or to dispose of waste water if necessary.

There is also one of the Finnish state ALKO shops in Ivalo, where you can buy alcoholic beverages that you can't get in the shop. But beware! Despite a 33% tax cut on alcohol, prices are still high. So alcohol continues to be an expensive pleasure in Finland. In addition, traffic violations for alcohol in Finland carry very high fines. The calculation is based on daily rates, whereby 1 daily rate is one-thirtieth of the monthly income.

And if you are hungry from all the shopping, you can eat something in one of the "grillis" or in one of the hotel restaurants. The hotels have "good" prices. You can also get hot food in some petrol stations, and at reasonable prices.

So have fun shopping.

You can find it in Ivalo, if you turn off at the crossing in Ivalo before the bridge towards Inari towards Nellimö, at the next crossing the white building on the right. There is a parking lot in front of it. The costs can be billed to the health insurance company afterwards (according to our calculation rates).
