Inverewe Garden is a botanical garden at Poolewe in Scotland.

description

Inverewe Garden is a botanical garden where many subtropical plants are cultivated. there are around 2500 species in total. Many of these species are not winter-proof and can only exist in these latitudes because the Gulf Stream creates a mild climate. The focus of the collection are Rhododendrons and Eucalyptus trees. Pines were planted to break the wind, some of which are now among the tallest of their kind in Great Britain. The site has an area of around 20 hectares and is easily accessible through a network of paths. The dense planting and undergrowth never gives the impression of being overflowing, even if around 200,000 visitors are received every year. Inverewe is a unique composition of different plants, a whole day should be planned as an appropriate time to visit. Around the actual garden there is an approx. 800 hectare reserve in which many mammals and birds have a home. This area is also accessible by paths.

history

From 1862 the area, which was previously a rocky peninsula, was laid out as a garden by the Scot Osgood Mackenzie. Initially a walled kitchen garden, the garden was gradually expanded and a botanical garden was created with plants from the temperate zones of the northern and southern spheres.[1]
