The region Ioannina is in the province Epirus in the North Greece. It borders on the other Epirotian regions in the south and west, in the north Albania and in the east Macedonia.

The region is characterized by the Pindus Mountains. In the east lies the Smolikas or Lyngos, with 2,637 m the highest mountain of the Pindus and after Olympus the second highest Greek mountain, the Grammos at 2,523 m lies on the border with Albania and the neighboring province of Macedonia.
In the north of the region is the Zagoria, the Slavic expression means Place behind the mountains. It is the area between the places Ioannina, Metsovo and Konitsa and covers an area of around 1000 km². Only around 6,000 people live here in 46 villages.

In this region there are places such as Metsovo, most of whose inhabitants belong to the Aromanians or Armanen belong, their language is related to Romanian.
getting there
An important road link is that A2, also under the name Egnatia Odos, Ἐγνατία Ὁδός known. It forms the end-to-end west-east motorway connection starting from Igoumenitsa above Ioannina to Thessaloniki and is generally subject to a toll.
