Context

The floating islands of the uros They are a group of artificial islands made of reeds. Float in the Titicaca lake. Its inhabitants are the Uros, an ancient people. Currently this town is distributed in the Collao plateau. In Peru they only inhabit the floating islands located in the bay of Puno.[1]

Subsistence on the floating islands is based on a culture linked to the lake and the reeds that sprout from the bottom of the lake.

The construction of these islands is done by weaving the reeds in the areas where it grows more thickly, forming a natural layer that the Uros call khili; On this layer they build their homes, also made of a woven reed mesh which they call matting. Each house has a single room and they cook outdoors to prevent fires.[2]

Churches, schools and communal premises usually have a corrugated iron roof. On the islands they also build corrals to raise pigs, guinea pigs and poultry.[3]

In Peru there are more than 20 islands of the uro chulluni ethnic group, the number of families that occupy an island is quite variable, in general it ranges between three and ten. Among the main islands, at the beginning of the 21st century, the following stand out: Tupiri, Santa María, Tribuna, Toranipata, Chumi, Paraíso, Kapi, Titino, Tinajero and Negrone.
