Orkney Islands is a region of the Scotland.
To know
The Orkney Islands have been stabilizing since the Neolithic period. There are many activities to do on these islands which, moreover, are easily navigable, without mentioning the splendid landscapes.
Territories and tourist destinations
The Orkney Islands can be divided into three groups taking the main island as a reference:
Northern Islands - Northern Islands - The Northern Island group is the largest. The medium-sized islands are connected to the Mainland by ferries. The islands defined "holms"are the smallest.
Southern islands - The southern islands develop around the gulf of Scapa Flow. Hoy is the highest island, while the islands of South Ronaldsay and Burray are connected to the Mainland by the Churchill Barriers, barriers built during the Second World War by Italian prisoners to prevent the passage of German submarines. Roads were later built on the Barriers linking some of the islands.
