Istán is a white village in the hinterland of Marbella. It is located at the intersection of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park (Snow Mountains) and the Sierra Blanca Biosphere Reserve.

Istán has no rail connection. The nearest train stations are in Torremolinos and Algeciras.
In the street
In Marbella, the A7176 towards Istán branches off the inner city expressway A7 at the level of the Saudi Arabian Royal Castle. The A7176 leads under the toll motorway AP7 uphill, past the reservoir Embalse de la Concepción and ends at the entrance to Istán. The reservoir was built in 1971 and supplies Marbella with drinking water. It is fed by the waters of the Rio Verde, which has its source in the Sierra de las Nieves.
By boat
The nearest sea port is Málaga, where cruise ships also dock.

Tourist Attractions
- Ermita de San Miguel, on the A7176, 3 km before Istán.
- Iglesia de San Miguel. Church built in 1510, destroyed during the Moorish rebellion of 1569, rebuilt in 1715.
- Embalse de la Concepción reservoir. At the southwest end of Istán there is an elevated lookout point with a good view of the reservoir.
- Guernica. A replica of the famous monumental painting "Guernica" by Pablo Picasso is on the back wall of a house, which lies on the path that lies between the town center and the viewpoint.

Signposted hiking trails start below the Hotel Altos de Istán, which can be reached via the steep mountain road that leads from the village entrance to the top right to the municipal stadium and swimming pool. A nice and easy hike leads along the Rio Verde, where you first pass the source El Nascimiento, which is known for its fresh drinking water. From this hiking trail a forest road branches off to the 20 km away Monda which runs along the edge of the Sierra de las Nieves.
Next to the hotel there are hiking trails in the direction of Ermita de San Miguel as well as to Marbella (not recommended) and to La Concha, the highest mountain in the Sierra Blanca (very difficult).
