Before the bridge over the Jequitinhonha river, the city was divided into two, the crossing was made by canoes or ferries. But, there was a rivalry between the two sides of the city.

As in the interior of Minas Gerais, Itinga's climate is hot most of the year. The hottest months are August and September, while the month with the highest rainfall is December.
