Ivujivik is the northernmost community of Quebec. It is part of the region of Nunavik in the Northern Quebec.
Understand
The northern village of Ivujivik is the northernmost community in Quebec, above 62e parallel. In fact, it is only 28 kilometers from Cape Wolstenholme which is the northernmost point in Quebec.
Inuvik is located on the coast where the Hudson Bay and Hudson Strait currents meet. The place is ice free for only twenty days during the summer. In fact, the name of the village in inuktitut, the main language of the Inuit, means "place where one is caught by drifting ice." »Off the village, there are the Digges Islands which are part of the Nunavut.
Story
The place has been inhabited by Inuit for at least 3,000 years. It is even believed that Ivujivik was the starting point for Inuit migrations in northern Quebec. In 1610, the Digges Islands off Ivujivik were the site of the first meeting between Europeans (Henry Hudson) and the Inuit of Nunavik.
To go
Like all the villages of Nunavik, Ivujivik is not connected to the road network in Quebec. The plane is the only way to reach the village. It is served by Air Inuit.
