Jakobstad is a city in Western Finland. A Swedish-speaking majority live in the city. But the Finnish residents also tend to use the Swedish name Jakobstad instead of the Finnish Pietarsaari.

background

Jakobstad was founded in 1625 by Ebba Brahe, widow of the count and general Jakob de la Gardie. It had its heyday at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. During this time, their shipyards were booming. In 1762 the first tobacco factory in Scandinavia was founded here. With industrialization, the cellulose and paper mills also found their way.

getting there

Since Jakobstad is located between Vaasa and Kokkola on the coast, it is obvious to drive on the E06, but this leads a few kilometers inland past Jakobstad. From the south you leave it at Petäjävesi and then have to continue 7 kilometers on the 741 From the north you have to leave it at Kållby and drive a short distance on the 68. If you have time, you can of course also drive into the city on the coastal road 749. It leads through the city.

The closest train station to the VR is in Petäjävesi, from which buses go to Jakobstad. However, only three trains per day stop here in each direction. It is easier to get there via Kokkola, from where there are also buses to Jakobstad. Jakobstad can also be easily reached by bus from Vaasa.

From Kronoby Airport there is a shuttle bus connection into town.
