Western Finland - Westfinnland

Western Finland includes the west and southwest Finland with the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia. It was also an administrative unit until the provinces were dissolved in late 2009. Here are with Turku and Tampere two major cities as well as that Näsijärvi-Sea system.

  • Jakobstad
  • Jyväskylä - University town, many buildings by the architect Alvar Aalto.
  • Naantali - not far from Turku, a pretty seaside resort.
  • Nokia - formerly the seat of an inflatable boat manufacturer.
  • Pori - old port city, from which the sea is getting further and further away due to geological processes. Known for its jazz festival
  • Rauma - World Heritage; largest old wooden house town in Northern Europe.
  • Ruovesi - Located on Lake Ruovesi of the same name, 80 kilometers north of Tampere. Starting point of the "Pirkan Taiwal" hiking trail to the national park Helvetinjärvi.
  • Sauvo - east of Turku, varied nature, active community.
  • Seinäjoki - some buildings by the architect Alvar Aalto, music festivals of different styles.
  • Tampere - To the Helsinki suburb Espoo third largest city in the country. Industrial city and center of the labor movement (including Lenin Museum).
  • Turku - Port city, former capital and spiritual center of the Swedish minority, in the extreme southwest.
  • Vaasa - next to Turku and the Åland Islands, the third Swedish-speaking center in the country.

Significant National parks are in the region Helvetinjärvi, Isojärvi, Kauhaneva Pohjankangas, Lauhanvuori, the south-western archipelago, Pyha-Hakki, Salamajärvi and Seitseminen.

getting there

17 km southwest of Tampere there is a small airport to which Ryanair connections from Frankfurt-Hahn, London and Riga consist. Other airlines that fly to the airport are Finnair and SAS. A bus connection (€ 6 with a 30-minute journey) to the main train station and a taxi service are available.

  • In the summer months there are boat connections on the rivers, lakes and canals.

Tourist Attractions

  • Turku is the former capital of Finland. There are numerous sculptures in the city's parks and along the Aurajoki. The Turku Castle is is a museum. Its labyrinthine corridors invite you to immerse yourself in history.
  • Naantali is a romantic small town near Turku.
