Monument to Vladimir Lenin

Characteristic

The city was founded in 1632 by Piotr Beketov as a strong Cossack stronghold. It is now the capital and largest city of Yakutia. It is an important administrative, scientific, cultural and industrial center of Northeast Siberia. Yakutsk airport, Maganoraz airport and Lena river port operate here.

There is a mammoth museum in Yakutsk. The city is situated on permafrost (all buildings must be built on stilts), not far - for Siberian conditions - a distance (900 km) from the northern hemisphere's cold pole (Verkhoyansk, -70 ° C). The climate is remarkably continental: a very long and cold winter (average day temperature in January -38.6 ° C, absolute minimum -64.4 ° C was recorded in February 1891), short but warm summer (average day temperature in July 19.5 ° C, an absolute maximum of 38.4 ° C was recorded in July 2011.

The population is mainly Russians and Yakuts. The city is the seat of the Yakut eparchy of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Mining (diamonds, gold), food, tanning and metal industries. Yakutsk diamond deposits exploited since 1983

By car

The only road that is passable all year round, connecting Yakutsk with the rest of the world, is the A360 motorway, commonly known as "Lena" (formerly M56). The road is badly damaged and not fully paved. The second option to get to the city is the A331 ("Wiliuj" motorway). It runs from the city Tulun (Irkutsk region) and flows into the city from the west.

By rail

The city has been connected to the railway network since 2019. There is no train station in the city, but it is located in Niżny Biestiach - approx. 15 km in a straight line, across the river. You can get there via a ferry that runs, among others in spring and summer.

By bus

Buses run to the city twice a week from Nieriungri (driving time approx. 18-20 hours) or from Aldan (driving approx. 12-14 hours). You can also get here by minibuses, but drivers expect the vehicle to be full so that the trip is worthwhile.

Transfiguration Cathedral

Communication

All transportation in the city includes bus transportation. It is carried out by private external companies operating on nearly 20 lines. Marshrutkas are also omnipresent, commuting to virtually all places in Yakutsk. The main communication center in the city is the bus station (ул. Октябрьская 24, ul. Aktjabrskaya), from which you can get, for example, to larger towns in the area.
