Yakutsk (Russian: Якутск, jakuto: D'okuuskaj) is a city of the Eastern Russia, capital of the Sacha-Yakutia.
To know
Yakutsk has earned a reputation as the coldest city in the world but is worth a visit for the great natural beauty of the surrounding landscapes. As one of the most remote lands in the world, Yakutsk mainly attracts tourists with an adventurous spirit.
Geographical notes
Yakutsk is located in the Tuymaada valley, crossed by the middle stretch of the Lena, the easternmost of the three great Siberian rivers (the other two are the Ob 'and the Enisej) that flow into the Arctic Ocean.
The surrounding area is flat, dotted with countless alluvial lakes, characterized by shallow waters and sandy shores. The largest of these lakes are: Saysary, Teploye, Taloe, Khating-Yuryakh and Sergelyakh. Between the city center and the left bank of the Lena river there is a grassy plain, the so-called green lawn, regularly subject to flooding during the spring phase of the melting of the ice.
The city center is crossed by a shallow channel that starts from the river port. The bottom of the canal is regularly dredged to allow the navigation of small boats.
When to go
Yakutsk is located at the latitude of 62 ° N and is characterized by a decidedly continental climate, with records of both daily and annual excursions.
The average temperature in January is around -42 ° C while in July, the hottest month, the thermometer averages around 19 ° C. July is also the ideal month to plan a trip unless you want to experience it for yourself. the thrill of the extreme cold of January, when anything left out in the open, like a fabric or a dress, solidifies and becomes hard as a stone.
Spring, even late, with its sunny days, is still the ideal time to practice winter sports such as ice skating, cross-country skiing or even excursions on dog sleds. Obviously the spring temperatures are still low for those who come from lower latitudes but not such as to exclude outdoor activities. In March, for example, the temperature stands at -22.5 ° C.
The summer months of June-July offer the opportunity to enjoy the midnight sun and go up the rivers by canoe.
Global warming causes the destruction of deeper and deeper layers of permafrost, turning the ice into a muddy mush and endangering the stability of buildings.
Background
Yakutsk was founded by a detachment of Cossacks under the leadership of Pyotr Beketov who in 1632 erected a fort on the right bank of the Lena river from which developed the urban agglomeration which was given the name of Yakutsk in 1647.
Yakutsk soon became one of the most important Russian outposts in the Russian Far East, and in 1822 it was proclaimed a city. In 1851 it was designated the administrative capital of the Autonomous Republic of Yakutia.
Today Yakutsk is one of the most dynamic cities in the Russian Far East.
