Characteristic

Geography

The district is located in the arctic zone of the West Siberian Lowland in the extreme North, with an area of 769 thousand square meters. km², ie an area 1.5 times larger than the territory of metropolitan France. The southernmost tip of the circle is only 800 km away from the northern polar circle. More than half of the territory lies behind the Arctic Circle. The territory of the district includes the Yamal Peninsula.

It borders the Krasnoyarsk Krai to the east, the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug - Jugra to the south, the Komi Republic and the Nenets Autonomous Okrug to the west, and the waters of the Kara Sea to the north.

Climate

The area of the District lies in three climatic zones: polar, subpolar and cool temperate. The local climate is characterized by large changes in temperature and other weather conditions throughout the year, long, cold and severe winters with heavy snowstorms and blizzards.

The lowest temperature recorded is –56 ° C. Summer is short - on average it lasts about 50 days.

The polar climate zone includes the islands in the Kara Sea and the northern part of the Yamal Peninsula and the Gydan Peninsula. It is here that the features of the District's climate are most visible: winter is very long and hard, and snowstorms and sweeps are the strongest. The lowest temperatures are also recorded here (absolute minimum -56 ° C).

In winter, the snow cover does not exceed 40 cm. Spring comes late. Temperatures at night do not fall below 0 ° C only in July. There is often a high level of cloud cover. In autumn, strong winds join the cloudy weather.

The temperature usually drops permanently below zero already in September, but sometimes there are warmer summers and then during the day it becomes positive even in October, and the waters do not freeze until November.

The subpolar climate zone covers the more southern parts of the Yamal and Gydański peninsulas. Summer (or rather warm season, with no frosts) in this area lasts longer, up to 68 days. It rains mainly in the warm season, in the form of rain.

The southern part of the region, situated in the West Siberian Lowland, lies in the zone of cool, temperate, extremely continental climates. Average temperatures are higher. The snow cover reaches a thickness of 60-80 cm. and is delayed from mid-October to mid-May. The summer is quite warm and humid. The frost-free period is approx. 100 days.
