background

Jasper Tourist Information Center

Jasper is a tourist town at an altitude of 1062 m with around 4300 inhabitants, which you cannot avoid if you want to vacation in Jasper National Park and are traveling without a camper and / or tent. In an east-west orientation, one has crossed the town on the main street at the normal pace on foot in around 20 minutes. In north-south orientation you can do this in less than 10 minutes.Jasper used to be always in the shadow of the hip Banff, which had the positive result that the place developed much more adapted, building sins are not found here. A special feature of Jasper is its location in the middle of the national park, which limits the political sovereignty of the municipal assembly, and the national park administration is involved in all decisions. You can't just move to Jasper either, that is only possible if you work in the village or in the national park.

Jasper in the center consists mainly of restaurants, small shops, supermarkets and souvenir shops. Well-known long-distance trains stop at the central train station as well as kilometer-long freight trains (see under Arrival).

For the stay in Jasper, as for the rest of Jasper National Park, a fee is due, which should be 9.80 CAD per person and day, or 19.60 CAD per family and day (as of 09/2010) Always keep your receipts, as nobody has to pay for more than 7 days in Canadian national parks in a calendar year.

getting there

Traditionally, the journey to Jasper is done by car via the Yellowhead Highway (= Highway 16); either from the west from Clearwater or from the east from Edmonton. The Icefields Parkway comes from the south of Banff.

Greyhound Canada offers various bus routes to Jasper, for example from Vancouver and several times a day from Calgary above Edmonton.

Two companies offer travel by train. VIA Rail Canada with the The Canadian - the old trans-Canadian Toronto-Vancouver connection - and the The Skeenathat of Prince Rupert wrong with Jasper. The Rocky Mountaineer offers mainly package trips with its panorama trains, there are travel options from Vancouver and Whistler, but not all year round.

mobility

In the clearly arranged place, you can either move on foot or by car. Those arriving by train are often picked up from the booked hotels at the train station.

Tourist Attractions

  • Maligne Canyon. There is a 3 km long hiking trail (duration around 45-60 minutes) that starts at the 6th Bridge and winds its way up to the 1st Bridge along the Maligne River through the narrowing canyon, crossing the Maligne River in each case. If you have little time, you can also explore the most beautiful part (1st to 4th bridge) from the parking lot above.
  • Medicine Lake. Between Maligne Canyon and Maligne Lake. Since the drain runs underground and does not come back up until a few kilometers later, the Indians used to believe in a magic ("Big Medicine").
  • Maligne Lake. The south bank with Spirit Island is probably the most photographed motif in this region. A trip with the excursion boat costs 55 CAD p.p. (Status: 09/2010) and takes 90 minutes, but even without a boat trip, the lake is a must when the weather is nice.
  • Mount Edith Cavell. Named after a WWI nurse. A 12 km long spur road ends at a parking lot, from there a circular path (approx. 1.6 km) leads to the glacier and its meltwater lake in which small icebergs swim. A highly recommended excursion.
  • Rented Hot Springs, 60 km towards Edmonton; Departure from the Pocahontas Mine. The chances of seeing black bears, bighorn sheep or white tail deers along the way are good.
  • The Whistlers. The 2470 m high "local mountain" of Jasper with summit station and cable car (Skytram), this overcomes the first 1000 meters in altitude (there and back 35 CAD). At the mountain station, another ascent of around 200 meters in altitude begins to experience the perfect 360 ° mountain panorama with an incredible view. The tour is actually only worthwhile when the weather is nice, for the ascent above you need non-slip and non-slip footwear, as the path is sometimes quite steep and leads over gravel or snow fields (depending on the weather).
