Khiva - Jiva

The entrance gates to the ancient city of Khiva, the Ichan Kala.

Khiva (in Uzbek: Хива Xiva; in Persian خیوه, Jiveh) is a city of Uzbekistan located in the southwest of the country. Capital of the historical region of Corasmia, as well as of the ancient Khanate of Khiva, the city is currently the most important in the west of the country.

Legend has it that Khiva was founded by Sem, one of the sons of Noah, and that in this place he would have been born al-Juraismi, the creator of algebra. Despite the aridity of the area, the inhabitants of the region built an intricate irrigation system that allowed culture to flourish in the city. An example of this is the wonderful inner city, Ichán Kala, with its ramparts and dazzling madrasas.
