Jossgrund is a community in East Hesse.

Map of Jossgrund

background

The large community of Jossgrund consists of the localities Burgjoss, Oberndorf, Pfaffenhausen and Lettgenbrunn. The first three places are all in the Jossa valley, while Lettgenbrunn is already in the Spessart heights.

The history of Lettgenbrunn is particularly interesting, because the place has only existed in its current form since 1952, when a completely new settlement for displaced people from the East German areas (especially Sudeten Germans) was built here. The place is therefore not a typical Hessian village, but has a strong Bohemian-Moravian character.

Jossgrund advertises its location in the middle of the Spessart, partly together with the neighboring one Mernes, which geographically also belongs to the Jossatal. Families who are looking for a relaxing holiday in the countryside, but also hikers will get their money's worth here.

getting there

By plane

By train

The next train station is in Waechtersbach, from there on by bus.

By bus

There is a ring traffic over Bad Orbserving all localities. Two lines (MKK-82 and MKK-83) run in exactly the opposite direction, so that the overlapping of the two lines during the week results in an hourly cycle. Since the ring traffic only starts in Bad Orb, which has no rail connection itself, you always have to change trains twice to Jossgrund (in Wächtersbach and then again in Bad Orb), but the connections are coordinated. At the weekend you can only reach the place with the call taxi, which essentially drives the same route as the bus, with the same frequency.

In the street

The next motorway junction is Symbol: AS 45 Bad Orb / Wächtersbach on the A66From there you drive 15 km to Jossgrund. The road over the Wegscheide to Burgjoss is quite steep, but not very demanding even for the inexperienced driver; the approach via Lettgenbrunn, which is also signposted, should be avoided without mountain experience.

mobility

See under arrival. The buses can be used during the week, otherwise the call taxi may have to be used.

A Motorhome parking space is located behind the Burgschänke in Burgjoss.

  • 1  Catholic Church of St. Martin. The Catholic Church in Oberndorf is also called "Dom an der Jossa" due to its size. The church construction dates back to 1891, when the old early modern church from 1658 was demolished in favor of a new building in the neo-Romanesque style. In 1952 the church was expanded with a new nave.
  • 2  Lettgenbrunn Church. The church in Lettgenbrunn is one of the rare simultaneous churches in Germany and dates from the time this place was built. The church is divided in the middle; the left half is used by the Protestant parish (under the name "Johanneskirche"), the right half by the Catholic parish (under the name "St. Jakobus").
  • 3  Burgjoss Castle, Burgstrasse 5. The castle in Burgjoss is one of the oldest castles in the Spessart. It was first mentioned in a document in the 9th century as a wooden post to secure the possessions of the Fulda monastery. The timber construction was replaced by a stone moated castle in the 12th century at the instigation of the Lords of Jossa. After the house of Jossa moved to its aristocratic residence Zwingenberg relocated, the castle changed hands several times until it fell to Kurmainz in 1541. The Prince-Bishop of Mainz, Daniel Brendel from Homburg, had the castle converted into a Renaissance palace in 1573. After the Mainz territory fell to Bavaria in 1814, the Bavarian state established a forestry office in the castle, which still exists today and is responsible for the southeastern corner of Hesse. In 1973, behind the castle with the Burgwiesenpark (it is not a historical castle garden, even if it looks like it), a leisure facility with a children's playground, mini golf course and Kneipp pool was set up.
