Mernes is a village in the Jossatal in East Hesse and state-approved resort.

background

Politically, Mernes belongs to the city Bad Soden-Salmünster. However, the village is 20 kilometers away in the Jossatal, not far from the border with Bavaria, and is separated from Bad Soden-Salmünster by the wide strip of the Spessart, so that the place forms an exclave and has very little in common with Bad Soden-Salmünster.

Tourist Attractions

  • 1  Catholic Church of St. Peter. The Catholic Church in Mernes was built in 1660-1671 on the foundations of its predecessor. When it was expanded in 1934, the church choir and paradise were retained in their original location, so that the church - which is otherwise very unusual for Catholic churches - faces north. The church looks very simple from the outside, but contains relics from the demolished old church in Lettgenbrunn, including the high altar from the 16th century.
  • 2  Mernes waterworks, Salmünsterer Strasse 21. The waterworks in Mernes dates back to 1913. The Prussian military urgently needed a reliable source of water to supply their military training area on the road divide and finally found it in the small village of Mernes. In return, Prussia guaranteed the town's residents a free supply of drinking water. Until today the people of Mernes get their drinking water on the basis of this contract without having to spend a cent - now from the city of Frankfurt am Main. A tour of the waterworks can be arranged through the village shop for a small fee.
  • 3  Stacking. The 465 meter high Stacken is Mernes' local mountain. From the place you have to climb a good 200 meters in altitude to get up here. The effort is rewarded not only with a view of the entire village and the Jossatal, but also with a view of the Rhön mountains in the other direction.
  • 4  1950s museum, Burgjosser Strasse 18a. Tel.: 49 6660 919290. Privately operated museum with exhibits from the time of the economic miracle.Open: on request.Price: free entry.
