Bad Soden-Salmünster is a city on the edge of the Spessartwhich is particularly important for tourism as a spa. The city is in Main-Kinzig district.

background

Bad Soden-Salmünster is a classic twin town with two centers - bad Soden as a health resort with the appropriate infrastructure, Salmunster as an economic center and transport hub. The two places were merged as part of the territorial reforms in 1974; there was also the small village Merneswhich is described in a separate article due to its location.

In the run-up to the regional reform, a few more villages were incorporated into the region:

  • Ahl was a very important place before the autobahn was built, because the main road from Frankfurt to Fulda ran here. Today the small town on the Kinzig is pretty sleepy.
  • Alsberg lies on the heights of the Spessart in a forest clearing.
  • The three villages of the Huttengrund, Eckardroth, Romsthal and Wahlert, have all grown together today and therefore appear to the tourist as one big village. The name comes from the fact that the villages were formerly owned by the von Hutten family.
  • Catholic Willenroth has a very idiosyncratic name, as the place was sold by Kurmainz to Isenburg in the early modern times, but the inhabitants were able to persuade them not to be forcibly reformed as was common at the time. The place is best known for its country school home, which is visited by students from all over the region.
  • Kerbersdorf is already on the southern foothills of the Vogelsberg and is a typical small village.

The city gives the impression of having stood still a bit in time and of having missed out on modern developments. The course offers are mainly aimed at seniors, young people will be bored here.

The somewhat unwieldy place name is often used by locals as BSS abbreviated.
