The place of the first miracle performed by Jesus Christ, which took place in Joh 2,2-11 EU The transformation of water into wine described on the occasion of the wedding in Cana has been a Christian pilgrimage site for centuries.

Ultimately, the exact location of the miracle is not completely clear; in his report, the papal envoy Francesco Quaresimo cites two places in the middle of the seventeenth century that could have the honor of being the biblical Cana. He chose Kafr Kana, possibly only because a church already existed here and the place was more accessible than Khirbet Qana.

The other candidate 1 Khirbet Qana ("Ruins of Cana"), had always had the better cards: in a travel report Theodosius mentioned in the 6th century that a cave with a rack for six stone jugs was found there, two of which were still available on site which suggests that at least a vivid memory of the wine miracle was kept here and that pilgrims came to this place. In reports from the time of the Crusaders, too, Khirbet Kana was viewed as a place of miracle. Archaeologists uncovered the remains of a Hellenistic - Jewish village with a mikveh plunge pool.

With the construction of the Wedding church In Kafr Kana, the fame as a place of pilgrimage definitely passed to today's Arab city: here, too, archaeologists uncovered remains from the Stone Age - Bronze Age period up to the Mamluck period. In reports from the 11th century is in Cana described a monastery complex on whose territory also the Maqam, the shrine or the tomb of Yunis (Jonas) lies. Under the Ottoman rule, the place developed into a local trading center with a Muslim - Jewish population at the beginning of the 20th century. the place had 1200 - 1400 inhabitants, about two thirds of them of Muslim faith. After the War of Independence in 1948, the place was occupied by troops of the Haganah as part of Operation Dekel, the inhabitants surrendered to the Israeli troops under the Catholic and Orthodox priests and they were assured that they would stay in the place. Today, 30% of Christians still live mainly in the old town center of Kafr Kana.
