Nazareth (also Nazareth, Arabic:الناصرة‎, an-Nāṣira, Hebrew: נצרת, Nasarat) is a city in the north Israel. The origins of the city lie in a hollow, which is surrounded by hills in the shape of a horseshoe, the hills surrounding the old town are now completely built over. The approximately 75,000 inhabitants are mainly Christian and Muslim Arabs, and a good 40,000 Jews live in the new town of Nazaret-Illit.

background

Religious meaning

Nazareth, first mentioned in the New Testament, was the hometown of Jesus Christ and his parents, of Mary and Joseph the carpenter. Here Mary was announced the birth of Jesus through the angel Gabriel (Lk 1,30-38 EU), from here Joseph had to move to his place of birth Bethlehem for the census, this is where the Holy Family came at the end of their lives Escape to Egypt.

According to biblical tradition, Jesus later spent his youth in this place. The early Christians, the followers of Jesus from Nazareth were referred to as Nazarenes, which is used in the terms נצרים (Nōṣrīm) the Jews and نصارى (Naṣārā) which Arabs to denote the Christians.

history

Mary's Well, late 19th century

Based on archaeological finds from a burial ground, the region was settled in the 2nd millennium BC. verifiable, traces of an Iron Age village date from the 13th century. B.C. Ruins of a village from Hellenistic times indicate that at the turn of the times the region was sparsely populated and that Nazareth was probably just a small settlement. In 2009, in the vicinity of the Annunciation Basilica, remains of a residential building from Roman times were found during archaeological investigations. Ruins of a synagogue mentioned in the New Testament were not found; the Greek Orthodox synagogue church is said to be on the site of the synagogue that Jesus visited, but the truth of this tradition is at least very questionable.

getting there

In most cases, Nazareth is visited by Christian groups of pilgrims by coach, the route information is only of interest to individual travelers:

By plane

Most overseas travelers will be by air via the Ben Gurion Tel Aviv Airport arrive.

By bus

Since the city in Lower Galilee is not connected to the Israeli railway, the easiest way to get there is by bus Egged runs a daily bus connection on the line 955 between Jerusalem (from 12.45 p.m.) and Nazareth (opposite direction, from 8.45 a.m.); from Tel Aviv reverses the line 826 every half hour, but only stops at the South Nazareth Junction on the road 75 southwest of the old town near the intersection with Paulus HaShishi St. The line runs from Haifa 343, which at Paulus HaShishi St. a little closer to the old town, stops every hour, the line 323 runs between Nazareth and Afula - Hadera; On the Egged website there are links to Google Maps with the exact position of the stops.

In the street

Of Haifa coming here one takes the street 75, which circles the city of Nazareth from the south, in roundabouts with the Paul HaShishi and the street 60 crosses and circles the city center in the east.
From the north of Haifa resp. Kirjat Jam If you come from here you can alternatively take the street 79 which circles the city of Nazareth in the north. The streets 700 and 754 (above Kafr Kana) connect the expressway with the city center resp. the one ending in the northeast 75.

Coming from the south you take out of the large area Tel Aviv resp. from Hadera first the street 65, drives around Afula and then takes the 60 in a northerly direction. The southern approach through the narrow valley below the Mount Precipice is bypassed thanks to a new viaduct and a tunnel, road 60 ends at a large roundabout with the mouth of the 75.

From Lake genezareth coming here one drives on the road 77 of Tiberias and after approx. 30 km turn onto the street 754, by Kafr Kana leads that in the Bible at the Wedding at Cana (Joh 2,1–3 EU) was mentioned.

mobility

The important main artery Paul HaShishi St. leads by bypassing the 75 past the city center ("Old City") and ends at Marienbrunnen ("Mary's Well"), from where the HaGalil St. in an arc to the north end of the 75.
The center with the Annunciation Basilica can be reached on the aforementioned Paul HaShishi St. or on the Tawfid Ziad St. from the big roundabout of the 75 from that on Ha-Ir Square getting together. However, parking spaces are in short supply here. An alternative is to look for a parking space in the vicinity of "Mary's Well" and from there to reach the old town on foot.

The best way to explore downtown Nazareth is on foot. The maze of alleys in the city center is hardly passable with a private car, which makes things more difficult because the street names in Nazareth usually only consist of four-digit numbers. The old town area has numbers around 6100; some of the street names are also called in Arabic, which usually does not make it much easier for Western Europeans to find their way around.

The tourist information office will provide you with a folding map on which the sights and suggested sightseeing routes are also indicated in German.
