Tourist Attractions

  • 1 Gangatila Vihara on the south bank of the Kalu Ganga. The Buddhist temple is divided in two by the road. On the east side there is a modern white dagoba with a height of 40 m, it is the only one in Asia whose interior can be entered. Inside there are relics and wall paintings with motifs from the life of Buddha. On the west side of the road there is a large Bodhi tree, an offshoot of the legendary tree in Anuradhapura. It is the custom that the many drivers of tuk-tuks, taxis or other cars stop briefly at this temple, throw a small donation into a sacrificial vessel, pray with a prayer for an accident-free journey and then continue. Tourists who are not that familiar with the locals' driving style have probably prayed throughout the trip.
