background

Kandersteg lies at the upper end of the Kandertal. Its name goes back to a footbridge over the Kander. A mule track has been leading across the Gemmi into Valais for a long time. It has only been an independent municipality and belongs to the Frutigen district since 1908. The tourist boom began with the opening of the Lötschberg line, because Kandersteg is located at the north portal of the Lötschberg tunnel, which opened in 1913. Today, the tourist offer includes 19 hotels with around 1,000 beds and 800 holiday apartments with 2,000 beds, a campsite and 22 restaurants. Kandersteg tries to be able to offer a family-friendly offer, which the municipality also succeeds in.

In Kandersteg there is a Boy Scout Center Kandersteg, founded in 1923 by the World Scout Association WOSM, the first permanent international meeting place for scouts. Around 10,000 scouts meet here every year.
