Spiez is a Swiss City in the canton Bern.

In addition to Spiez, the municipality of Spiez also consists of the districts of Einigen, Hondrich, Faulensee and Spiezwiler. It is the largest municipality in terms of population in the district of Niedersimmental (district), but not its main town, which is Wimmis.

The Spiez train station is a junction, where the Lötschberg line branches off from Bern via Brig to Dommodosaola, and the lines to Interlaken and Zweisimmen. There is an express train from Bern via Thun at least every half hour. There are direct trains from Basel and Zurich (partly also from Germany).

There is a bus connection between the train station and the boat station at the castle. The route can also be walked, but there is a not to be despised difference in altitude to be overcome.

Tourist Attractions

  • Church of Spiez. One of the most beautiful Thunnersee churches. Already in 762 it is mentioned that there was a church here. The current building was built around the year 1000. Some special features can be discovered in the interior. Unique frescoes from the 11th century have been preserved in the raised choir of the earlier Romanesque basilica. The oval crypt with its priest bench is also a rarity.
  • 1  lock. The castle was built over several centuries. The lower part of the keep dates from the 10th century, the upper part from the 13th century. Representation rooms from the 14th-18th centuries Century. Some of the rooms are accessible, including the early baroque ballroom and the renaissance-style täfferstube.
  • The castle and the church are located together in a vineyard area and form a very beautiful ensemble.
