getting there

Distances
Ngapali Beach100 km

There are travel options from both Thandwe (Ngapali Beach) from, as well as from Yangon.

Thandwe: The express bus to Yangon leaves Thandwe at around 2:00 p.m. and arrives at Kanthaya around 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (stop at the Sail Horse Restaurant). The ticket price is between MYK 5,000 and 10,000. It is possible to charter a private taxi, but you have to dig deep into your pocket (about $ 100).

Most of the roads from Ngapali are in very poor condition from Thandwe. With a taxi you have to plan about 5 hours driving time for this distance (approx. 100km). However, the route leads through wonderful landscapes with mangroves and agricultural fields. For the route from Yangon to Kanthaya (approx. 290 km) 12 hours of driving time must be planned, whereby the passport must always be shown. Especially through the mountains, the road is in a catastrophic condition. Speeds of over 30km / h are unthinkable.

mobility

There are only a few Velorischkas and ox carts on site, but no taxis.

Tourist Attractions

  • Kanthaya Beach. A huge, deserted, palm-fringed, flat sandy beach, located near a river delta.
  • Fishing villages. All along the coast there are small fishing villages with unspoilt, happy local people.

activities

  • Strolling along the coast and through seemingly endless palm groves.
  • Bathing in the crystal clear sea water, which is over 25 degrees from November to March.
  • Collect shells on the endless sandy beaches.

shop

The small, local grocery stores sell unrefrigerated drinks, chewing gum, fruits, vegetables and fish as well as small handmade souvenirs. However, the region is in no way geared towards tourists.

kitchen

  • Sail Horse - This is the largest restaurant on Kanthaya Beach and has very good fish dishes.
  • Modern restaurant - The restaurant is opposite the Sail Horse.

The region also offers wonderful dishes made with coconut, peanut or curry.

nightlife

Due to the lack of electricity, none!

accommodation

  • Kanthaya (Pleasant) Beach Resort. Price: $ 22 per night.
    - The state hotel with a few bungalows was built in 1995 and allegedly repaired in 2006 after a storm. However, the accommodation looks very shabby (a separate sleeping bag instead of the existing bed linen is recommended). The restaurant is closed except for the (poor) breakfast supply. Electricity is only available in the four absolutely dilapidated bungalows that can still be rented from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. All sockets have been removed so that only two poor lights are on. There is only cold water. The sanitary facilities are extremely poor and are in a desolate condition. The room prices for the lotter suites with partially broken floors are quoted at US $ 30, but can be traded down to US $ 22. In May 2010, the facility is to be taken over by the pro-government owner of Air Bagan.

Due to strict government regulations for the whole of Rakhine State, tourists are only allowed to stay overnight in Ngapali and the Kanthaya Beach Resort. Any other type of overnight stay is prohibited!

As of April 2014: The resort is still closed due to the storm damage in 2008. Opposite is a very simple guest house where you can stay overnight in a double room for 8000 K per person / night.

trips

  • As far as possible by taxi along the coast to idyllic bays and palm beaches. Guaranteed deserted and untouched.
  • Possibly a ride on a wooden boat for a half-day excursion. Price is always easily negotiable.
