Karigasniemi (Gáregasnjárga) is a village in the Finnish Lapland in the municipality of Utsjoki.

To know

Sami, Finns and Norwegians live together in the village. In the past no one cared about borders and families lived on both sides of the river, as they continue to do. It is possible to hear all three languages in the village and it happens that they are used mixed together. They can be studied in primary school. Many live in one of the two countries and work in the other. Not only the inhabitants of Karigasniemi participate in cross-border events and shopping.

The Sami are the majority in Karigasniemi. Although income has always come from many sources, some have traditionally derived their livelihood primarily from river fishing while others from large-scale reindeer farming. Both traditions are strongly rooted in the area, although of course the newer occupations have spread and people live modern lives in many respects. Tourism is important in this area.

Looking at salmon rivers, neighboring Tenojoki is the most productive of those in Northern Europe, supplying 15/20% of all salmon caught from European rivers. There are 9,000 tourists who fish in this river every year, catching an average of 40 tons of salmon.

Geographical notes

Karigasniemi is located on the eastern bank of the Inarinjoki River (Anarjohka), which delineates the border with the Norway. A little further downstream the Inarijoki meets the Karasjoki River (Karasjohka) to form the Tenojoki (Deatnu, Burrow).

Background

The village was connected by an asphalted road in 1940. Previously, an old postal route was used through the Muotkatunturit nature area to the southeast, which still exists today.

How to get

Crossing the border is not problematic, thanks to the Nordic cooperation and the agreement of Schengen. Norway is not part of theEuropean Union, but under the different applicable legislation, the goods may need to be declared; animals must have their papers in order and fishermen and boaters need a certificate on disinfection. There is a common customs office on the Finnish side.

By car

Karigasniemi is crossed by the national road 92 (here called East Karigasniementie, Norjantie west from the center), which becomes state road 92 di Norway across the river. The scenic regional road 970 (Ylätenontie) follows the Inarinjoki and Tenonjoki rivers for 100 kilometers downstream towards Utsjoki. Local road 9704 (Inarijoentie) goes upstream (south) towards Angels.

By bus

There are daily buses along route 92 from Rovaniemi Street Ivalo is Inari, some continue to Karasjok, High is North Cape. For Utsjoki there is a transfer to Kaamanen (for buses along the E75).

How to get around

The village is small enough to be seen on foot. The bicycle or car is almost strictly necessary to reach any other place (unless the bus passes properly). In winter there are snowmobile trails (check rates and regulations for renting a snowmobile; driving off the marked routes requires permission).

Most of the services are very close to each other near the road intersection. The ancient village is located 3 km along the road upstream.

Fishing equipment, including boat and boots, must be disinfected if coming from other waters (e.g. via proper drying or at a disinfection point; certificate required), due to the parasite Gyrodactylus salaris present in many other northern waters.
