Carcass (also Carcass; france: Weather in Carcassonne; Occitan: Weather in Carcassonne) is the capital of the Aude department in the southwest France, approx. 150km from the border with Spain.

Understand

Carcassonne belongs to the region Occitania. This name is used in two ways: for an official region created in 2014/2016, containing 13 departments, and for an unofficial region, a larger one, containing the entire southern France from the Atlantic to Piedmont. The name is linked to the Occitan language.

Carcassonne lies by the river Aude (the name is written in both French and Occitan), which flows from the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean, and is next to the cross between two very ancient roads: from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, between the Pyrenees and the Central Massif; and from Central France to Spain.

The core of the historic town is a hill beside the river, very suitable for a fort dominating the lower trade route.

History

The Celts built a fort on the hill, which was conquered in 118 BC. of the Romans, and rearranged (Julia Carcaso, later Carcasum). The remains of the Roman fort are still partially visible.

In the 5th century, the Visigoths conquered the city and enlarged the fort.

The Arabs, who conquered Spain, ruled Carcassonne only briefly (from 725 to 759), but their presence left a legend for a Lady. Carcasses, which gave its name to the city and opposed the siege of Charlemagne (who never really besieged Carcassonne).
