The small town of Katakolo on the coast of the Peloponnese was the loading station of in the middle of the 19th century Currants. But history points back much longer: Katakolon was a port already in antiquity, at that time it was called PHEIA. Finds date back to 3000 AD. Under water you can see the remains of a ancient city see. Katakolo is already mentioned by Homer. The ancient historian Thucydides describes the landing of the Athenian fleet as part of the Peloponnesian War 431 AD. An earthquake with a tsunami is recorded from the year 551 AD.
Today there are around 500 inhabitants in Katakolo. The port is the destination of cruise ships, sometimes three ships are in the port at the same time. Most of their passengers make trips to the 35 km away Olympia. But the place itself is also worth a visit. Although it has retained its character as a typical fishing village, there are many shopping and dining options with excellent fish taverns and modern cafes and bars.
