Tourist Attractions

In addition to the baroque village churches in Weischwitz, Breternitz, Fischersdorf and Eichicht and the neo-Gothic church in Kaulsdorf, the Kaulsdorf Castle and the Eichicht Castle are particularly worth seeing. The half-timbered castle Kaulsdorf was built as a castle in the 12th century by the Counts of Weimar-Orlamünde. It stands directly above the village. The tower is particularly striking: Eichicht Castle, also a half-timbered castle, towers high above the Loquitz, which is a particularly impressive picture from the direction of Hockeroda. Other special buildings in Kaulsdorf are the Alte Schmiede at the beginning of the Lastweg with its eye-catching gable and the Prussian post office, also known as the Gasthaus Rosenthal. After a fire in 2010, the post station was demolished in 2013. Other sights include the Schliefertsattel (accessible via the Saalfeld-Leutenberg hiking trail) with its view of the Franconian Forest and down into the Saale Valley, the Sorbenstein with a view of Sormitzal, and the Lohmkuppe. At the Lohmkuppe there is a mountain hut, many resting places and a forest stage, where events often take place in summer. But nothing beats the panorama that is best enjoyed from the Lohmturm.
