Tourist Attractions

Friedensburg Castle, entrance area

The town has an idyllic old town with many half-timbered houses. That is about Leutenberg Friedensburg Castle, which was the residence of the Counts of Schwarzburg-Leutenberg. Later it served the Counts of Schwarzburger-Rudolstadt as a widow's seat. Aemilie von Schwarzburg was a famous resident. After it was the object of the State Security in the GDR and was a brief restaurant in the early 1990s, it now serves as a specialist hospital for dermatology. The inner courtyard is freely accessible, the premises, such as the apple room, can be visited on a guided tour, for which you have to register in advance (more information directly at the castle).

Further sights are the neo-Gothic town hall, the town church and the local history museum. Signs point to other sights and historical buildings.

These signs can also be found in the individual districts of the community of people mountain. The districts are: Grünau, Dorfilm, Herschdorf, Hirzbach, Kleingeschwenda, Landsendorf, Löhma, Munschwitz, Rosenthal, Steinsdorf, St. Jakob and Schweinbach. These small villages often have a beautiful townscape and old churches. A special highlight is the upper basin of the "Hohenwarte II" pump storage facility on the Amilienhöhe near Löhma, from where you have an unforgettable view of the Hohenwarte dam. All districts can be reached via the six circular hiking trails (the shortest 3 km, the longest approx. 15 km long) from Leutenberg.

Menschenberg is ideal for hikers. There are not only the six circular hiking trails, but also many hiking destinations in the vicinity of the city: Sizzohöhe, Bernhardtstein, Cronebrunnen, Schwartzenshöhe, Siebentälerblick and much more. The Sormitz hiking trail runs through Leutenberg from Wurzbach to Hockeroda. Along the wild and romantic Sormitztal you can learn a lot about the valley. The hike can be ended at any time at one of the train stations (Wurzbach, Zschachenmühle, Lichtentanne, Leutenberg or Hockeroda), which are located directly on the hiking route. There is also the Saale-Orla hiking trail (red triangle on a white mirror). The Saalfeld-Leutenberg hiking trail (green bar on a white mirror) ends in Leutenberg below the Löhmberg. Along its course there are always beautiful views, for example from the Schliefertsattel to the Saale Valley or the Franconian Forest, or amazed with geological gems, such as the slide with the devil's bridge or the plank wall.

Further hiking trails that run through the community of people mountain are the international mountain hiking trail Eisenach-Budapest (EB or Blue Cross), which runs here together with the mountain hiking trail E3 (Atlantic-Black Sea), and the Hohenwartestausee circular hiking trail. Both touch the districts of Löhma and Steinsdorf, the EB also Kleingeschwenda. Overall, Leutenberg is suitable for an active family holiday in nature and a quiet atmosphere.
