background

history

Kenai Fjords National Park was established in 1980 on the basis of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA). The law regulated the creation and expansion of existing protected areas in Alaska.

landscape

The national park includes a coastal landscape with many glaciers, bays and islands in the Gulf of Alaska. Most of the landmass is covered by the Harding Icefield, one of the largest ice fields in the United States. The park's landscape has been shaped by plate tectonics as the Pacific Plate dips beneath the North American Plate along the coast.

Flora and fauna

The forests in the national park consist mainly of spruce and hemlock. Large land mammals such as grizzly bears, black bears, moose and mountain goats live in the area of the Kenai Fjords National Park. North American otters, beavers and many different species of birds can also be found here. Among other things, bald eagles and peregrine falcons, as well as yellow lobster and hornlund, which are also known as puffins.

Since the national park extends into the Gulf of Alaska, marine mammals such as sea otters, seals, Steller sea lions and various types of whales, including orcas, fin whales, humpback whales and minke whales, also live here. The white-striped dolphin can also be found here.
