Kerman Province

The province Kerman (Persian: استان کرمان) is one of the provinces in the Iran.

places

  • Kerman is the provincial capital and known for its carpet artwork. The bazaar and the caravanserai are worth seeing i-Wekil and the Friday Mosque.
  • Maymand is a historic cave village dug into the rock in the west of the province.
  • Zarand (city) is known for its fossil sites and a 109 million year old dinosaur footprint.
  • Rafsanjan is a center of the carpet trade and the pistachio cultivation.
  • Mahan is about 35 kilometers south-east of Kerman and offers an imposing burial place of a Sufi scholar from the 15th century as well as the nearby Shahzadeh garden.
  • Rayen has an adobe castle similar to the one in Bam, but has still been preserved.
  • Bam is still under reconstruction after an earthquake in 2003 devastated the historic adobe citadel and city.

Other goals

  • The Dascht-e Lut Desert is the largest desert in Iran and one of the hottest places on earth. 70.7 degrees Celsius were measured here by satellite. The desert is largely deserted and no archaeological finds have been made to suggest that the desert was inhabited in the past. Unique natural formations make a trip to the desert worthwhile. Occasionally one comes across an old abandoned Kawanserei.
    • 1  Kalout. The Kalouts are so-called Yardangs (tabular form of erosion in loose sediments), in which the constant wind drags forms out of the desert and leaves them standing as stratified, narrow, elongated monuments. These Sandcastles can be several tens of meters high and are located about 35 kilometers behind Shahdad in the desert. You can go on a day trip from Kerman (journey time 1.5 to 2 hours). Due to the heat in the desert, however, you should break out at around five in the morning.
