Surroundings

  • In Meliskerke the tower of Odulphus Church (14th century) has a slight kink. The tower collapsed during construction and was just continued to be built afterwards. Here, too, the houses are built in a ring around the church. Some old Zeeland farms have been preserved.
  • Around Biggekerke there are seven different mountains of escape, including one under the church square. The Sint Maartens Chapel (or Chapel of Hoogelande) on the Hoogelandseweg is hidden behind tall trees. 1189 received the residents of Hoogelande from the Bishop of Utrecht permission to build a church. The village and church were destroyed in the Eighty Years War (1568-1648). A ruin of the church remained, which was expanded into a real chapel in 1964-65. Plans to rebuild the village have not yet been implemented.
