Kuşadası (pron. kusch-adase) is a city in the Aegean region in the Turkey.

background

Kuşadası is in the province Aydın and has approx. 100,000 inhabitants (2014). The distance after Izmir are around 80 km. The city is well developed for tourism and has a corresponding infrastructure. It is particularly popular with the Turks themselves.

Due to its location, it is the ideal starting point for many excursions, e.g. to Ephesus, Miletus, Selcuk or Pamukkale. The proximity to these ancient sites and the associated tourism boom brought the city about 650,000 tourists in 2008 via the cruise ships alone. In connection with this, the range of large, comfortable and partly luxurious hotels that can also be used as conference and congress venues grew.

getting there

By plane

Kuşadası does not have its own airport, but is connected by the international airports of Izmir and Bodrum.

By train

Kuşadası has no rail connection, the nearest train station with connections to Aydın and Izmir is in Selçuk.

In the street

The well-developed, partly four-lane coastal road D 515 runs through the city.

By boat

  • Kuşadası has a port for large cruise ships that is regularly approached. Day trips to Kuşadası and the surrounding area are possible. Every year around 600 cruise ships moor in the high sea port, and their guests are brought by buses to the ancient sites of the region in the form of day trips.
  • The 24-hour marina Setur Marina is one of the most important in Turkey in terms of size, equipment, service and technical possibilities. It offers space for up to 650 yachts and is approached by up to 3,000 skippers every year.

mobility

The preferred mode of transport for locals and tourists is the "dolmuş", a minibus that stops at the roadside and lets guests get on and off. There are also isolated stops, for example in front of the big bazaar. The dolmuş is also the cheapest way to explore the surrounding area. You can stop by lifting your hand slightly and looking at the vehicle. If you make "wink-wink", it can happen that the driver waves back and drives on. Taxis are ideal for more individual routes or destinations.

Tourist Attractions

  • The car-free old town in the immediate vicinity of the harbor with narrow streets, a mosque and many souvenir shops is worth seeing.
  • 1 - You enter the old town from the harbor at the former caravanserai Öküz Mehmet Paşa on Ataturk Boulevard, which is now a hotel and has a beautiful inner courtyard. It is an Ottoman fortress built in 1618 to protect maritime trade. The building was extensively restored in 1966. A two-story colonnade surrounds the 18.5 x 21.6 m large inner courtyard. A squat arch vaults the almost three m barred, marble and simple main entrance on the north side facing the harbor. The focus of visitor interest in this guest house are the three areas "custody area", where one gave one's goods in custody, the "servants area" and the former prayer fountain in the courtyard, which has now been redesigned as a draw well. The colonnades surrounding the inner courtyard are divided into column sections, behind which there are chambers, each with an oven and cupboards of different sizes. A flat roof covers the property. The north-east and north-west walls of the caravanserai are specially fortified in order to be particularly protected against attacks from the sea. The east gate leads to the pedestrian zone of the old town.
  • 2 - The Kaleiçi Mosque stands in the old town, somewhat hidden by the closely surrounding houses. Like the caravanserai, it was built in 1618 by the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire, Öküz Mehmet Paşa. The entrance gate is decorated with geometric shapes and mother-of-pearl inlays. A dome stands on a 12-sided base with 16 windows. The mosque was extensively restored in 1830. The visitor will find a foot washing facility right next to the entrance.
  • 3 - Less "worth seeing", but always worth a visit, is the market hall, where a fruit and vegetable food market is held every Friday.
  • 4 - The town's landmark and namesake is the small offshore island of Güvercinada, the "pigeon island". It is connected to the mainland by a narrow pier and carries a castle that was built by the Ottomans as an extreme military post to protect against Greek attacks. The castle stands on the highest point of the island and contains a cistern. After extensive restoration, the visitor is offered restaurants and cafes. The island offers a special sight after sunset, when it is illuminated. The park around the castle is a popular, romantic meeting place for couples in love for a moonlit rendezvous. (In April 2016, access was blocked due to construction work.)

activities

Apart from the tourist activities, you can of course also spend a bathing holiday on the fine, flat sandy beaches. Worth mentioning are:

  • 1 City Beach south of the marina, a small beach with a view of the cruise ships.
  • 2 Ladies Beach, about 2 km from the city, southeast. There are numerous restaurants and cafes on the promenade. There should be a noticeably large number of male visitors here at the weekend because they have a correspondingly large selection of Ladies suspect.
  • 3 Long Beach. The 18 km long sandy beach Long Beach between Kuşadası and Güzelcamlı is gently sloping and therefore safe for a beach holiday with children.
  • In between there are a few smaller beaches, which are mostly reserved for the guests of the neighboring hotels.
  • 4 Diving school at the marina. At the marina, a diving school offers special diving trips or, in winter, fishing trips. Address: Turkmen Mah. Tükel Apt. 301 Sok. No: 1 / A 09400 Kusadasi / Aydin. Tour operators and hotels also offer a wide range of diving and other water sports.
  • In the Dilek National Park in particular, there are numerous trekking routes where you can encounter numerous animal and plant species.
  • Safaris on horseback, by quad or jeep can also be booked through the local tour operator or the tourist information.
  • 5 Adaland (Aquapark), animation with dolphins, several bars and taverns as well as discos.

shop

  • Due to the tourist attractiveness of Kuşadası there are many large and small bazaars / shopping streets, some of which run through the old town. However, there is also a "classic" pedestrian zone that has less in common with Turkish bazaars.
  • 5 - Every Friday there is a fruit and vegetable food market in the market hall.
