Kyritz is a city in the Prignitz in Brandenburg.

background

Kyritz is nicknamed “an der Knatter”. On a tributary of the Jäglitz river there was a row of water mills that made a lot of noise. Travelers with the stagecoach often exclaimed "Now comes Kyritz an der Knatter".

The city has a very eventful history. In 1381 the knight Curt von Bassewitz attacked the city with his army. The Kyritzers had been warned and were defending their city. Every able-bodied man received a gun and the women cooked porridge to pour it on the attackers. Gradually the strength of the Kyritzers waned and the city seemed to be lost. At the last moment the citizens took courage again and were finally able to put the enemy to flight. To gloss over the defeat, the men of the knight Bassewitz claimed that an angel who is said to have fought for the Kyritzers had appeared on the city wall.

In 1411 the knight Bassewitz returned with his entourage and besieged the city. Apparently he wanted to starve the city, in reality he wanted to enter the city through an underground passage. Bassewitz snuck through a sewer and wanted to dig the passage to the surface for the last stretch. A prisoner sentenced to death heard the knocking and scratching in his dungeon. The next morning he told the councilors that he would have something very important to tell them if they would allow him the freedom to do so. The gentlemen agreed and he reported the noises he had heard. Drums with peas were immediately set up in order to be able to determine the vibrations in the earth. Citizens should be ready armed. Bassewitz originally wanted to arrive at the church, but had misjudged himself and stuck his head out of the ground on the market square. The Kyritzers were already waiting for him there and the women are said to have poured hot grits over his head. The knight Bassewitz was captured and executed with his own sword. The sword and the armor are still kept in the town hall today.[1]

In memory of these events, the Bassewitz Festival was celebrated on the Monday after Invokavit, or the first Sunday after Ash Wednesday. A service took place and every church visitor received a "round piece", that is, a large bread roll. The city officials and the children received small gifts of money. "Hedwecken", a kind of bread roll with raisins and sugar, were baked in the families. When they wanted to cancel the festival, great disasters are said to have struck the city, such as city fires or a plague epidemic. Today the festival is celebrated every two years.

Kyritz is the hometown of the fictional comic detective Nick Knatterton and was sung about by Ernst Hilbich: “Today is carnival in Knieritz an der Knatter”.
