background

La Calera was the first fully developed tourist resort in the Sierras de Córdoba. The first guests arrived as early as the 19th century. But than the one further to the west Punilla valley experienced a rapid boom around the middle of the 20th century, things went downhill with La Calera. In addition, the borders of the city of Cordoba were getting closer and closer. Today La Calera has more of the character of a dormitory town. Social contrasts are fueling the problem: While the rich occupy the most attractive properties in increasingly larger and better-located country clubs, fenced off and fenced off (last example: the formerly popular outdoor pool in a flooded quarry, Laguna Azul), the center is more dominated by simple workers. However, the traveler will hardly notice the conflicts.

  • Jesuit chapel. Ruta E-55. Built in 1767 in a simple colonial style. Visiting hours Wed to Sun 10 am-1pm and 4.30pm-7pm.
  • Molino Doble. Ruins of colonial mills from the 18th century. Located just off the E-55 route at the junction for Malagueño. The substance is in good condition, but the inside is often misused as a garbage can.
  • Power station. In the old power station at Casa Bamba there is a museum that documents the construction of the Dique San Roque, once the highest dam in South America. Today very little electricity is produced, the dam is more important for regulating the amount of water that flows down in the Río Suquía.
  • Municipalidad. Town hall on the main street. Probably the most beautiful historical building in La Calera, from the 1930s in neo-colonial style.
  • Fine Arts Museum, located on the river.

activities

Banks of the Río Suquía
  • Swimming. The best bathing beach is a bit out of the way in Casa Bamba (8 km west of the center) in the valley of the Río Suquía. It can be reached by bus to Cosquín, but you have to walk a bit. Also nice beaches in Villa Diquecito (3 km west) in the same valley. The beach in the center is rather unspectacular and dirty. Better against that Dique Mal Paso, a small reservoir in the north of the city. How long you can bathe in this is completely open because of the settlement of country clubs in the area.
  • hike. The hiking trails in the region are generally not marked. There is a little-known, beautifully situated waterfall in a side valley, but you have to go to it via private property. Ask the locals for directions. Permission to enter the site is usually not a problem.

shop

There are few shops, but you should get everything you need. The shopping center is on Ruta E-55 near the bridge, but there are also shops in the center itself.

kitchen

Gastronomy is simple.

nightlife

The open-plan disco Olaf is also served with the youth from Cordoba. It is located directly on the river next to the bridge over the Río Suquía on the access road to the center. There are also some pubs that are especially popular because curfew hours are more liberal here than in Córdoba.
